Position Summary:

GS1 Overview
GS1 develops and maintains the most widely used supply chain standards that are fundamental to numerous enterprises around the world. The best-known symbol of GS1 standards is the barcode, named by the BBC as one of “the 50 things that made the world economy”. Five decades ago, we started by helping food retailers do business more efficiently and reduce consumer prices. Today, GS1 standards improve the efficiency, sustainability, safety and visibility of supply chains across physical and digital channels in 25 sectors, including healthcare, retail omni-channel and e-commerce, transport and logistics, food service, technical industries and humanitarian logistics. Our scale and reach – local Member Organisations (MO) in 116 countries, 2 million user companies and 6 billion transactions every day – help ensure that GS1 standards create a common language that supports systems and processes across the globe.
 

Role summary
The GS1 Leader of public policy Europe will plan and drive strategies to promote the use of GS1 standards with a variety of public policy stakeholders, including the European Commission, NGOs and trade associations. 
The successful candidate will be a highly accomplished individual with expertise in public policy, public affairs, government relations or policy communications work especially in the fields of consumer goods, data and technology, standards, sustainability.
The GS1 Leader of Public Policy Europe will report into the Vice President Global Public Policy and will work in co-operation with the GS1 in Europe team. She/he will work in the global public policy team with colleagues based in other regions of the world.
 

Responsibilities:

The Leader of public policy Europe, in coordination with GS1 Member Organisations and the GS1 in Europe leadership, will prioritise top critical issues, advise senior management on opportunities, and develop a proactive action plan in response. Relevant topics include policies related to 1) the digital economy, including e-commerce, marketplaces, data spaces legislative initiatives; 2) the EU green deal, circularity, digital product passports, digital labelling and product information; and 3) trade facilitation and customs procedures. 
In addition to addressing policy issues before the European authorities, the person will support GS1 Member Organisations in developing their responses to legislative initiatives in their countries. 
The Senior Manager will develop key relationships with all stakeholders, including government officials, trade associations and NGO's.  
The person will be representing and/or coordinating GS1 participation in key European public policy authorities and forums, such as at the European Parliament, European Commission committees etc.  and she/he will be serving, as needed, as spokesperson to the external communication channels, including social media, on European policy issues.
 

Education/Experience:

•  Prior experience in the European Commission/Parliament, trade associations or policy consultancy/research centers, is highly appreciated. It would be ideal if the person has additional corporate experience in one or more of the following: sustainability, digital economy, retail (especially data, e-commerce and marketplaces), consumer packaged goods, transportation and logistics, construction.   
•  Highly strategic, with the proven ability to develop and implement short and long-term public affairs/ communications plans.  
•  The ability to influence and gain instant credibility with senior leadership of GS1 in Europe and senior GS1 management.  
•  It is essential that the successful candidate has excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate persuasively verbally and in writing. •  Fluency in English is of high importance. Spanish, Portuguese or French strongly appreciated. 

  

•  Bachelor or master’s degree in political or social sciences, European law, International Law, Data and technologies, with 10 or more number of years of related experience in the European institutions/trade associations environment 
•  Retail or consumer goods industry experience a plus
•  A good understanding of the data and data spaces environments

Skills required:

•  Ability to simplify complex political initiatives thanks to her/his analytical, verbal and written communication skills
•  Ability to effectively communicate with different seniority levels, and both highly technical and non-technical persons seamlessly
•  Effective relationship builder – one on one, one to many, internally and externally, towards small and large organisations
•  Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
•  Strong business-focused and results-oriented

Additional Information:

Travel requirement: 20% mostly in Europe
