Position Summary:

GS1 develops and maintains the most widely used identification standards that are fundamental to numerous enterprises around the world. The best-known symbol of GS1 standards is the barcode that is printed on many products you purchase daily, named by the BBC as one of “the 50 things that made the world economy”. Four decades ago, we started by helping food retailers do business more efficiently and reduce consumer prices. Today, GS1 standards improve the efficiency, safety and visibility of supply chains across physical and digital channels in 25 sectors, including retail, marketplaces, healthcare, transport and logistics, food service, technical industries and humanitarian logistics. Our scale and reach – local Member Organisations (MOs) in 115 countries, 2 million user companies and 6 billion transactions every day – help ensure that GS1 standards create a common language that supports systems and processes across the globe.

 

GS1 standards can play a role in helping industry to comply with regulations, making processes more efficient for all parties involved. This can be done by:

-    Educating regulated parties such as marketplaces, brands (both large and SMEs) and retailers on how standards can help comply with existing/upcoming regulations.
-    Creating a compliance expert industry community to ensure common understanding and a standardized approach.

We are looking for an experienced profile to join the team to develop the understanding of regulatory requirements and the needs of our industry stakeholders, to identify the regulations that GS1 standards can support, to make links between GS1 standards and how they can be applied to support compliance and finally to support our GS1 Member Organisations around the world in their understanding and messaging to industry.  


 

Responsibilities:

•    Identify, research and study existing legislations to define how standards can be used to help comply efficiently
•    Develop value proposition, risk assessments and materials for industry (retailers, brands, marketplaces, SMEs) on relevant regulations (with and for GS1 member organisations)
•    Support harmonisation of implementation of GS1 of standards across industry
•    With GS1 Member organisations, find relevant contacts and build engagement with the departments that are working on compliance in relation with product identification
•    Build relevant compliance/regulatory community to build common regulatory understanding, standards application and work with GS1 Global Office Public Policy team to liaise with relevant bodies to get clarification
•    Build a regulatory monitoring program to ensure ongoing compliance 
•    Identify and build relevant tools for the community (for example training)
•    With the support of the GS1 Global Office Public Policy team , keep abreast of marketplace and ecommerce regulatory developments in different countries and coordinate information exchange with the GS1 engagement community globally
•    Create and maintain and oversee the relationships with relevant associations 
•    Participate in relevant events to educate or learn on how standards can support with compliance 
 

Education/Experience:

·       5+ years track record within a global or regional context

·       The ideal candidate will have a law degree or other relevant advanced degree

·       Prior work for a retailer, marketplace, FMCG brand is a strong plus

·       Prior experience in industry compliance departments, related consultancy or audit, regulatory affairs, national market surveillance authorities is a strong plus

·       Prior knowledge of GS1 standards is a plus

·       A good understanding and willingness to invest in knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to retail, e-commerce and marketplaces

·       Proficiency in conveying complex regulatory issues to non-lawyers

·       Fluent English is a must, oral and written – other languages an asset

•    Excellent copywriting skills – ability to rework technical text for a broader audience

•    Mature political sensitivity to work across a diverse community of interests and cultures
•    Effective relationship builder – one on one, one to many, internally and externally, small and large organisations
